Music game for the occasion

A family music game with one phone and no setup

Grandparents, parents and cousins all know different songs, which is the best reason to play together. One phone goes around the table and nobody needs their own device.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

The songs are real recordings played as 30 second previews, and the adults choose the deck before the game starts. Pick one decade and everyone ends up arguing over small differences, or pick a broad deck and each generation gets a moment to shine. Each player builds their own timeline, so a clever guess pays off for that player alone.

Younger players do not need to know the artist to place a song, they just need to decide whether it sounds older or newer than the songs on their timeline. Set a small target, around five cards, when the group is mixed, so a game fits between dinner and dessert. Anyone who would rather listen can sit next to a player and give advice.

Best way to play it Pass the phone. Pass the phone is the best fit because one shared phone keeps the whole family at the table, with nobody hiding behind a screen of their own.

How a game works

  1. 1

    Pick a deck

Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.

  2. 2

    Choose how to play

Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.

  3. 3

    Listen and guess

A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.

  4. 4

    Reveal and score

Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

Tips for a better game

Let the oldest player go first

It makes them the expert for a minute and sets a friendly tone. The tokens even out the rest of the game.

Use tokens to even out the field

Everybody starts with 2 tokens, and naming title and artist earns another. Skipping a song costs 1, which helps anyone stuck on an unknown genre.

Choose the deck together

Agree on a decade or a broad mix before you begin, so nobody feels the songs belong to somebody else.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
