Music game for the occasion

The music game for a night in with friends

Put the board on the TV, let everyone grab their phone and play a long, argumentative round of timelines. This one is for the friends who say they know their music.

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

A game among friends can take its time, and this one rewards it. Each player builds a timeline of songs in release order, one turn at a time, while the others comment from the sofa. When a player is unsure, anyone with a token can pay 1 to suggest another spot and steal the card, so a hesitant answer gets challenged.

The big screen shows every timeline at once, which makes the leader obvious and gives trailing players a reason to take risks. Plan for 4 to 6 friends if you want turns to feel quick. With 8 players the evening is a real tournament, so set a lower target for the winning card count.

Best way to play it Party room: Timeline. Party room: Timeline is the best fit because the turn-based board gives every friend time to build a timeline, and optional steal tokens add friendly rivalry.

How a game works

  1. 1

    Pick a deck

Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.

  2. 2

    Choose how to play

Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.

  3. 3

    Listen and guess

A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.

  4. 4

    Reveal and score

Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

Tips for a better game

Switch the steal tokens on

Stealing is where the table gets loud. Switch them off only if a friend finds it stressful.

Use your shared playlist as the deck

Turn a playlist your group knows into a deck, the first 100 cards are free, and the game becomes about your own taste.

Take a break after a full round

The game is turn based, so nobody is under a clock. Pause after everyone has had a turn if the table wants to talk.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
