The music party game for student houses and pre-drinks
Eight to twelve people in a living room, one laptop and a flatmate with the Wi-Fi code. Year Rush needs a browser, a QR code and about thirty seconds of explaining.
Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.
Student groups are big and lose patience fast, which suits a game with no turns. Everyone locks in a year within 15 or 20 seconds, the leaderboard updates, and the next song is already starting. Open the room on a laptop, play the sound through a speaker, and send the code around the group chat.
Use a deck of songs from the years your group grew up with, since those are the ones everyone half knows. Someone in the flat can turn a shared playlist into a deck, and the first 100 cards are free. If the Wi-Fi is weak, check that the phones have mobile data too, because every phone needs a connection.
Best way to play it Party room: Year Rush. Party room: Year Rush is the best fit because up to 12 people can guess at once, so nobody sits out while others take their turn.
How a game works
- 1
Pick a deck
Choose a popular public deck, or turn your own playlist into a deck.
- 2
Choose how to play
Pass one phone around the table, or open a party room where everyone plays on their own phone.
- 3
Listen and guess
A 30 second preview plays and nobody sees the year. Place the song on a timeline or lock in a year.
- 4
Reveal and score
Title, artist and year come out, the timeline grows or the points go up, and the next song starts.
The timeline in one look
A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.
Tips for a better game
Put the board on the TV
A bigger screen makes the leaderboard part of the show. A laptop on the table works if the TV has no browser.
Pick 10 rounds before a night out
It is quick enough to finish before the pre-drinks end. Choose 20 rounds when the evening stays at home.
Share one phone per pair
With more than 12 people, pairs can share a phone so everyone still plays.
Why it works at a party
No cards needed
Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.
Works in the browser
No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.
Three ways to play
One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.
Frequently asked questions
Does everybody need an account?
No. Players join by scanning a QR code or typing the 4 letter code and picking a name. Only the host signs in.

Do players need an account or an app?
