Year Rush: the guess the year game for a whole room

Everyone hears the same song and locks in a year on their own phone before time runs out. The closest guess takes the round, and a leaderboard keeps the room loud.

  • 2 to 12 players
  • Big screen plus a phone each

Free to try. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room need no account and no app.

There are no turns in Year Rush, so nobody waits. A song plays on the big screen, every player locks in a year on their phone, and the host sets the time limit to 15, 20 or 30 seconds. The year never appears on the phones before the reveal, so a quick glance at your neighbour tells you nothing.

Scoring rewards both knowing and nerve. An exact year earns 1000 points, within 1 year 800, within 3 years 500, within 5 years 300 and within 10 years 100. A speed bonus of up to 200 points is added when your guess scores, and the host can award 200 more if you also named title and artist.

How this way of playing works

  1. 1

Open the room on the big screen

Go to hitify.app/host, sign in with an email code, pick a deck, the time limit (15, 20 or 30 seconds) and 10, 15 or 20 rounds.

  2. 2

    Players join on their phones

They scan the QR code or type the 4 letter code and pick a name of up to 16 characters.

  3. 3

    Lock in a year

The song plays for everyone. Each player picks a year on their phone before the timer ends.

  4. 4

    Reveal, leaderboard, podium

The year appears on the big screen, points are added and the leaderboard updates. After the last round comes the podium.

The timeline in one look

A timeline is a row of songs in release order. You hear a new song, never its year, and decide where it fits between the songs already on the row. Get it right and the row grows.

What you need

A big screen with a browser

A TV, laptop or tablet that can also play the songs out loud.

A phone for every player

With Wi-Fi or mobile data. Up to 12 players can join one room.

A deck

A popular deck is free, or turn a playlist into your own.

Tips for a better game

Pick 15 seconds for a loud room

A short timer keeps the energy up. Use 30 seconds when the group needs time to think.

Guess close rather than not at all

A guess within 10 years still scores, so a rough decade beats an empty answer.

Agree how strict you are

The host confirms whether a player also named title and artist for 200 extra points. Settle the ground rules before round one.

Why it works at a party

No cards needed

Everything happens on screen, so there is nothing to print, shuffle or lose under the sofa.

Works in the browser

No app to install, not even for a party room. Open the page and play.

Three ways to play

One phone for a small group, or a party room with a big screen for a bigger crowd.

Frequently asked questions

How many players can take part?

From 2 to 12, each on their own phone. For a bigger group, let a few people share a phone as one team.

What if two players guess the same year?

They earn the same points for the guess itself, and the speed bonus usually separates them. The leaderboard adds up all rounds.

What does it cost to play?

Popular public decks are free to play. If you turn your own playlist into a deck, the first 100 cards of that deck are free.

Do players need an account or an app?

No app is needed. Whoever starts the game logs in with an email code, no password. Players who join a party room scan a QR code or type the 4 letter room code, then pick a name.

Ready for the first song?
